Honoring The Birmingham Campaign of 1963

April marks the anniversary of the 1963 Birmingham Campaign, also known as the Birmingham Movement. Led by Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth and the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR), this direct-action protest targeted the city’s unjust segregation system by putting pressure on Birmingham businesses. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) also joined in this fight for justice and equal treatment, during which MLK wrote his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”. The national attention and efforts gained by the Birmingham Campaign had a direct impact on the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Attend an upcoming event, take another tour of BCRI’s galleries, and follow @bhamcivilrights to honor this important, monumental campaign for justice and human rights.
