Changemaker Poetry Contest

We invite third, fourth, and fifth graders, living in or outside of the United States, to participate in the  “Changemakers Poetry Contest.” The purpose is to inspire a new generation of changemakers to work for justice and peace for all.

Entries are due by March 24, 2023 or the first 40 contestants.
 
Each grade will have a winner: First Prize $100 gift card, Second Prize $50 gift card
 
     We want to read and share your original poems. The contest is open to all students in grades 3, 4 and 5 living in or outside of the United States. Poems will be judged on Creativity/Style and Originality, Clarity of imagery and language, with an edge to poetry related to the 60th anniversary commemoration.
 
     Winner will be announced on April 1st during the “Commemoration of the Palm Sunday March” event at St. Paul UMC. 

A judging team from Magic City Poetry Festival will judge the contest and evaluate submissions.

Contest Rules:

  • One entry permitted per student;
  • Submission must reflect the contestant’s own poetry;
  • Poems may be rhyming or non-rhyming;
  • Poems should provide reflections on black history, culture, experience and/or social justice issues;
  • Poems should be no longer than two pages, typed or legibly written;
  • Author grants St. Paul UMC and Magic City Poetry Festival permission to post poems on our websites and to print poem in commemorative booklet;
  • All rights to entry remain the property of the author;
  • Poems will be judged on Creativity/Style and Originality, Clarity of imagery and language, with an edge to poetry related to 60th anniversary commemoration.

To be considered eligible, submissions must include all of the following on a separate page: title of the poem (to match title on poem page) the contestant’s name and grade level, name of parent/guardian along with their email address and/or phone number. Name of teacher if applicable for contact.
