Lead Research Coordinator * Part-Time * $21,000

St. Paul United Methodist Church in Birmingham, Alabama seeks support in scholarly research and oral history organization to develop the site’s visitor center.

Responsibilities include

  • archival research at state, local, and digital archives,
  • assisting in the exhibition design process for the site’s museum space.
  • enrolled in or graduated from a Masters or Doctoral program with a concentration in history or cultural preservation, and have demonstrated high-level research skills.
  • supervising other researchers (such as undergraduates)
  • the candidate should also be motivated, innovative, adaptable, and exceptionally organized. This is a one-year position for hybrid work, and the candidate must be able to travel to St. Paul/Birmingham at least once a week.

Academic History Tasks

  • Lead research of the history of St. Paul UMC from the founding of the church in 1930 through the present day.
  • Evaluate source material for historical accuracy.
  • Compose a historical narrative based on research for site use and reference.
  • Request high-resolution scans and copies of archival material as needed.

Collaborative and Supervisory Tasks

  • Assist in exhibition design and development for upcoming exhibition space.
  • Assist other researchers in completing tasks.
  • Synthesize findings of other researchers.

Requirements

Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge in archival research.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital humanities best practices.
  • Working knowledge of ethical interpretation best practices and willingness to learn additional skills in this area.
  • High-level attention to detail.
  • Strong interest in Black History, Civil Rights, historic preservation, and cultural heritage.
  • Proactive problem-solving skills.
  • Self-starting and highly communicative.

 Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
    • Transcripts required as proof of graduation.
  • Must be enrolled in or graduated from a Masters or Doctoral program in a relevant field, including but not limited to, History, Historic Preservation, Museum Studies, or Library Science.

Exhibition and community-based interpretation experience preferred.
